This is the first instrument I’ve bought since the recorder I had in elementary school. I got this for myself as a new pastime, and it’s been a lot of fun, so I wanted to leave a review of my experience.
The kalimba arrived in perfect condition with no scratches or damage. A few keys needed tuning, but the box kit includes a tuning hammer and a booklet that suggests apps for tuning. It took me a couple of hours to tune it, and I found some helpful YouTube videos beforehand to guide me.
Each key has its note engraved, and the kit provides green and red stickers as reference points for playing sheet music. I don’t use the stickers personally, but they’d be helpful for beginners. The booklet includes well-rounded information about the kalimba and even offers a beginner’s guide to learning sheet music, along with a few example songs.
The thumb caps were a bit small for me, but the kit also provides a soft cloth for cleaning the kalimba after use, which was great since I prefer to play without the caps. Always wipe down your keys after playing to prevent rusting from finger oils, and the provided cloth works perfectly for that.
The sound is beautiful and loud enough to play for friends or to be picked up by a microphone. I’ve played over calls with an iPhone 5, iPhone X, and a microphone without any issues.
The kalimba is around 5½ inches in length, 4 inches in width, and 1 inch in height. Overall, it’s a great product for yourself or as a gift. It’s easy to play, and I’ve really enjoyed learning this instrument.
